You can’t change your life without first changing your mind.
Right now, in this very moment, there are beliefs swirling around your mind that you picked up in some unknown time and place—beliefs that undergird your identity, how you see the world.
You have beliefs about relationships, money, time, religion, the universe, and whether or not it’s okay to put pineapple on pizza (it’s fucking not okay).
You have beliefs about yourself—probably way more than you realize and probably way more fucked up than you can imagine. You have beliefs about others—most of which are probably wrong. You have beliefs about the world, which are definitely wrong.
Do You Know What You’re Doing? Are You Sure?
Even if you can clearly explain your beliefs, you almost never know where these beliefs came from.
Maybe you soaked up some beliefs when you were younger. It’s what your parents believed or your teachers believed, so you—without thinking—decided that it would be what you believed.
Maybe you had a really great experience (or a terrible experience) that shaped your beliefs around rich people or poor people or smart people or dumb people or whatever.
Maybe your beliefs about climate change or taxes or a person falsely accused of murder who’s still in prison are based on a documentary you saw that one time. And even though you believe these things, you don’t really know if they are true.
The reality is that the world is a messy place. Life is an endless string of contradictions. Nobody is right about everything. Therefore, that implies that we all must be wrong about something.
What you learned when you were younger could very well be wrong. The intense experiences that shaped your worldview could have been the exception rather than the rule. And it doesn’t matter where you get your news or consume your entertainment—the media have always had an “agenda” that they’ve pushed.
So no matter how rock solid and true you think your beliefs are, chances are, you’re probably wrong about some of them.
The Secret to Being “Less Wrong”
The point in all this isn’t to always be right. That’s impossible. The point is to develop the ability to question your own beliefs. Because it’s by questioning your beliefs that you’re able to improve them.
You can consider new beliefs, try them on like a new pair of leather pants, see how they feel, and then choose whether or not to adopt them.
You can have opinions that are smarter, more nuanced, with more depth and complexity.
Or, here’s a novel idea: you can choose to not have an opinion at all.
Most people just kind of believe what they believe and that’s it. They don’t know where these beliefs came from. They don’t think about them. They don’t really even have good reasons for believing what they do.
But the great thinkers and innovators of the world all have one thing in common: they know how and when to change their minds.
Whether you’re trying to change the world, your life, or just your current situation, you can’t do it without changing your mind first.
Challenge Yourself to Be a Better Thinker
This is what my course Challenge Your Own Beliefs is all about.
In it, you’ll learn:
- 3 hacks to correct errors in your thinking and how to try on new ideas.
- The single most important question you can ask yourself to update your beliefs and go from being wrong to “less wrong.”
- A ruthless method of self-inquiry used by the world’s greatest thinkers that will either solidify your beliefs with rock solid evidence or make you drop them entirely for better beliefs. Either way, you win.
- How to stop the mental masturbation of “positive thinking”—and what to aim for instead.
- 2 ways of thinking differently that will separate you from the herd of lazy-minded people.
- How to entertain new and interesting ideas by holding beliefs more loosely, rather than clinging on to them no matter what.
The course includes four video lessons. You also get actionable exercises for each lesson and a really fucking pretty digital workbook that you can print off.
And that’s not all…
If you sign up for Challenge Your Own Beliefs, you’ll get access to all of my premium content in The Subtle Art School.
The School is a deep dive into all my favorite topics I’ve written about in my books and on my blog for nearly 15 years.
Here’s what you get with a single membership
A library of 6 new video courses — In addition to Challenge Your Own Beliefs, you’ll also get access to the rest of my courses:
Find Your Purpose
Finding your purpose in life can’t be done at a weekend seminar. It’s a lifelong process of asking and answering some difficult questions, taking action based on those answers, learning about yourself in the process… and then doing it all over again. This course will not only help you spend your time more intentionally, it will challenge your identity to the core.
I’ve said before that the one thing all your doomed relationships have in common is… well, you. So if all your relationships follow the same failing pattern; or if you’re a “commitment phobe”; or if you rush into relationships too quickly only to get burned; or you feel like you have to put on a front to attract someone—this course will help you get to the root causes of all of that and more.
Becoming more resilient in the modern world isn’t about avoiding suffering. It’s about seeking out the pain you’re willing to endure in service of a higher purpose. In this course, we cover the different kinds of suffering and consider why some forms of pain are actually quite healthy for us. We’ll get to the bottom of why you’re avoiding the necessary pains in your life and, ultimately, how you can turn and face them as a more resilient motherfucker.
Do you ever wonder why you do stupid shit sometimes? Or maybe you’re not in control of yourself in certain situations like you think you should be? Do you feel all emotions intensely… or not at all? Are you dead inside? If any of that sounds familiar, the Emotional Mastery Course will help you be less of a… well, less of an emotional dipshit.
Build a Better Life
This is the most actionable “nuts and bolts” course I offer. In it, we’ll come up with a step-by-step plan to get off your ass and get your life pointed in a more fulfilling, productive direction. It’s a great complement to any or all of the courses above.
Oh, And Here’s Even More
On top of all the courses, you’ll also get:
Monthly live webinars
Log on every month to ask me questions or just come hang out with other members. You’ll join people from all over the world who are also learning to give fewer and fewer fucks every day.
Really pretty digital workbooks
Each course comes with a professionally designed PDF workbook. Print them out and tape them to your fridge. Print them out and give them to your therapist. Or just open them up on your computer or phone and stare in awe at how gorgeous they are. I don’t give a shit what you do with them, they’re yours. And they’re really fucking pretty and packed with exercises that’ll make your life better.
Audio commentaries on my books, my old courses, ebooks that nerd out on some of my favorite topics, book reviews and recommendations, and more. New content is added on a regular basis.
What Our Students Say
“The concepts are very clear and fun to understand. I also like that I can combine the exercises in other things that I am doing.”
— Virnia Patzi
“Challenge Your Own Beliefs was an interesting and thoughtful course. It really helped me look at a burden of a false belief that I was carrying. Mark’s style is always light, fun, and informative. I’m glad I renewed my membership. This course was worth the price.”
“The course gave me a clear understanding of what some of my less than desirable beliefs were and the process for reviewing and replacing those beliefs. I was able to challenge some long-standing beliefs that were not serving me and using the process outlined in the course, I was able to make some real progress.”
“The course was nice and short with good value addition. Each lesson had its own learning to it. It makes you think of the belief system since childhood which we are made to believe or pick along the way. How they are adding value or taking much away from us.”
“The wisdom is very summarized so it makes a lot of fundamental concepts very accessible without the need to read and analyze a lot of books or articles.”
Will I be able to participate in live Q&A sessions with Mark?
