Even if you can clearly explain your beliefs, you almost never know where these beliefs came from. 

Maybe you soaked up some beliefs when you were younger. It’s what your parents believed or your teachers believed, so you—without thinking—decided that it would be what you believed.

Maybe you had a really great experience (or a terrible experience) that shaped your beliefs around rich people or poor people or smart people or dumb people or whatever.

Maybe your beliefs about climate change or taxes or a person falsely accused of murder who’s still in prison are based on a documentary you saw that one time. And even though you believe these things, you don’t really know if they are true. 

The reality is that the world is a messy place. Life is an endless string of contradictions. Nobody is right about everything. Therefore, that implies that we all must be wrong about something.

What you learned when you were younger could very well be wrong. The intense experiences that shaped your worldview could have been the exception rather than the rule. And it doesn’t matter where you get your news or consume your entertainment—the media have always had an “agenda” that they’ve pushed. 

So no matter how rock solid and true you think your beliefs are, chances are, you’re probably wrong about some of them.

The Secret to Being “Less Wrong”

The point in all this isn’t to always be right. That’s impossible. The point is to develop the ability to question your own beliefs. Because it’s by questioning your beliefs that you’re able to improve them. 

You can consider new beliefs, try them on like a new pair of leather pants, see how they feel, and then choose whether or not to adopt them. 

You can have opinions that are smarter, more nuanced, with more depth and complexity. 

Or, here’s a novel idea: you can choose to not have an opinion at all.
